The Desert Vipers BioBlitz

The Desert Vipers BioBlitz

Background

A BioBlitz is a short, intensive biodiversity survey where participants identify and record as many species as possible within the defined timeframe and area. These events combine scientific data collection with community engagement, allowing experts and participants to document wildlife while learning about and spending time in the ecosystems around them.
Global biodiversity is experiencing significant decline, with wildlife populations declining by 73% since 1970.

Desert Vipers, a professional cricket franchise in the DP World ILT20, recognises sports’ potential to contribute positively to nature. They have launched a series of BioBlitz events to connect people with nature while generating meaningful biodiversity data, leading to sustainable behaviours which protect and restore nature. In doing so, they are addressing Principle 4 of Sports for Nature: Educate and inspire positive action for nature across and beyond sport. By engaging fans and local communities in citizen science, Desert Vipers is raising awareness of local biodiversity and inspiring action to reverse the global wildlife decline.

Challenge

The Desert Vipers BioBlitz addresses three challenges.

  1. Biodiversity loss: Global wildlife populations have declined by 73% since 1970, driven in part by disconnection between people and nature.
  2. Youth mental health crisis: 8% of children and 15% of adolescents face mental health problems, with reduced time in nature contributing to this trend.
  3. Ecological data gaps: Insufficient biodiversity data makes it difficult to fully understand species distribution and ecosystem health, limiting conservation efforts.

Connecting people with nature promotes empathy for wildlife, which is critical to reversing biodiversity loss. Time in nature also improves mental wellbeing. By bringing fans and athletes together, the Desert Vipers BioBlitz creates shared experiences in nature, contributing to citizen science and building communities with a common purpose.

Approach

Firstly, Desert Vipers teamed up with Nature Wave to run the BioBlitz events. Since Desert Vipers is a franchise team and does not control any venues, they identified an opportunity to undertake their first BioBlitz at their team hotel, JA The Resort, to observe wildlife where they stay. This took place during one morning in January 2025 (Season 3), when Desert Vipers became the first Sports for Nature cricket signatory. Three Desert Vipers players and 26 schoolchildren and staff took part.

After a successful event, Desert Vipers took the BioBlitz international in Season 4, thanks to the support of Styrex by Fuelre4m, in the 2025 UAE – India BioBlitz.

Key to the success has been the support of Nature Wave, who use technology to make the sessions engaging and impactful. By publicising the results, the BioBlitz has generated connections to nature beyond those who participated in-person and reached people more broadly across Desert Vipers’ fanbase.

Results and impact

In Season 3, the JA The Resort BioBlitz recorded 97 species over 310 observations, involving 29 participants. This contributed to national wildlife records in line with the objectives of the UAE General Environmental Policy, delivering measurable environmental value.

In Season 4, the 2025 UAE India BioBlitz had an even greater impact, thanks to the support of Styrex by Fuelre4m. In total, 641 species were recorded over 1,961 observations, involving 103 participants. Of these, 1,138 observations were classified as wild, while 823 were recorded in non-wild or managed settings, highlighting the biodiversity value of human-influenced landscapes. 1,100 observations were made in the UAE and 861 were in India.

Additionally, in Season 4, Desert Vipers ran a stronger social media campaign around the BioBlitz, with eight posts. These posts generated a combined 10,200 engagements, 108,600 reach, and 244,700 views.

Overall, the Desert Vipers BioBlitz has recorded, in two seasons, 738 species over 2,271 observations, involved 132 participants, and reached hundreds of thousands more online.

Feedback from Nature Wave: “Nature Wave’s mission is to ignite a wave of people around the world who feel more connected to nature. If we notice, appreciate, enjoy – even love – something, we are far more likely to look after it, and the natural world is no different. That is why we believe that creative, fun ways to connect people with nature sit at the heart of all sustainability aims and a more abundant future for all life on Earth. The 2025 UAE – India BioBlitz is a brilliant opportunity to share this simple yet powerful idea with communities on both sides of the Indian Ocean.” – Alan Smith, Founder at Nature Wave.

Data Impact: Verified observations contribute to international species records, helping naturalists, conservationists, and policymakers better understand species distribution, seasonal patterns, and ecosystem health. This information can also inform environmental planning, habitat management, and conservation priorities. Finally, this enables future monitoring by allowing for comparisons over time.

Lessons learned

The Desert Vipers BioBlitz demonstrates that simple, community-led nature initiatives can deliver both meaningful engagement and useful scientific data. Clear guidance, accessible technology, and strong partnerships were critical to success.

One challenge was ensuring sufficient time for in-depth exploration of different species. Session planning to ensure the BioBlitz events covered a range of ecosystem types, including mountainous, coastal, and urban, helped address this. Going forward, more BioBlitz events across additional locations will lead to a greater citizen science contribution and stronger nature connection. On-site expert guidance and post-event verification through a free-to-use digital biodiversity platform helped maintain data accuracy and credibility. In future events, a short introductory training session could be incorporated to improve consistency in observations.

The approach is highly replicable and scalable. Other Sports for Nature signatories could adapt this model for venues or community spaces. Repeating surveys annually could support long-term biodiversity monitoring and trend analysis.

Ben Hardy-Jones, Business Sustainability Lead for the Desert Vipers, said: “Connecting people to nature is one of the best drivers of sustainable behaviour change. The Desert Vipers BioBlitz connects professional athletes and fans with nature in the UAE and beyond, contributing to citizen science in the process. “We were thrilled that we could build on the success of the JA The Resort BioBlitz in Season 3, with a multi-national 2025 UAE – India BioBlitz in Season 4, thanks to the support of Styrex by Fuelre4m. “We are excited to continue to develop the BioBlitz in Season 5 and beyond, connecting more people from all backgrounds with nature.”
